Costa Rican scientists are growing new corals to save our reef

For the past three years people have been snapping off pieces of coral from reefs to grow them in underwater nurseries. A team of scientists have been using tested techniques and experimental ideas to grow coral and also revive ancient coral reefs in the Golfo Dulce, the southwest of Costa Rica. They are helping to restore and revive local ecosystems and they could help researchers that hope to revive reefs in nearby counties.

Limón gets to 100 murders

On the 20th of August Limón reaches 100 murders. The amount of homicides triples from the amount of the region. The general homicide rate last year was 11.4 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, while Limón has a rate of 33 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. That is almost triple the nation's rate.

ARESEP approves lower electricity bills

The Public Services Regulatory Authority (ARESEP) approved a decrease in electricity rates of 6.86% in generation, which started to take effect on July 1st. This reduction is due to the application of the “ Variable Cost of Generation”(CVG) factor given the rainy season in the country. The discount applies between July and September, and its impact will benefit all consumers: residential, commercial and industrial.
