What’s the most commonly sighted animal that you have seen at BVS?

An Interview with Mr. Ronhaar
By Alice  Higginson  and Elena Parrilla

How have the students affected the wildlife?

“They leave trash and food, so when they have the chance the animals come to eat that food. Raccoons, and ants. They play with the animals and sometimes end up killing them.”

How do students usually treat the animals?

“They don’t often touch them but when they do they are usually weak or hurt. They mostly try to help them, like if a bird has hit the window, they would try to bring it in a cage and help it, look at it and hope it survives. Overall they treat them well.”

Do you have any suggestions on how students can help and not destroy the environment?

In the first place, I don’t think that it’s the students that are destroying the environment, more the constructors that build on the campus that remove the natural habitats of animals, for example, a parking lot. In the extension for the school, they destroyed the natural habitat for turtles. We used to have turtles here at BVS,but not anymore. The bulldozers went and killed all of them whilst clearing the area, so I don’t think it’s students that much it's more like our decision to construct. That really destroyed the habitat of animals, how could students cooperate if they want to make  the school a better place for animals? Well they could work together to do projects like planting trees, that are good for animals, make it even greener than it already is, like adding, not only grass, but bushes, and flowers.”

What’s the most dangerous animal that you have ever seen on campus?

The Coral Snake was very dangerous because it contains venom that affects your nerves. I killed it actually, because I didn’t want it to come into any contact with the students. Me and my Chemistry teacher friend.”
