The Russia-Ukraine war has been fought for 6 months. Although it’s not clear who’s winning, the momentum has started to swing back to the Ukrainian side. The Battle of Kharkiv, which took place from February 24 to May 14, 2022, was won by Ukraine and its counteroffensive strategies.

This led to the beginning of phase 3 of the war: Ukraine on the counteroffensive, which began around the beginning of September 2022. On September 11, Ukraine’s forces managed to seize the town of Izium after five months of occupation, claiming the Russians in the area were caught by surprise. This proves a major setback for the Russians. To put it in perspective, this is the first time since World War Two that entire Russian units have been lost. This loss caused the Russians in the area to retreat in order to make changes to their strategy before re-deploying. These repeated losses have made the Russian population and officials lose faith in their military, many of which have been pushing for Putin to resign.

On September 12, 2022, president Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that since the month began, Ukrainian forces have recaptured 6,000 square kilometers in the east and south of the country. However, Russia still occupies 127,484 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory, meaning there’s still a lot to get through.

On the 13th of September– the 202nd day of the war– Ukraine’s ambassador spoke to the US Oksana Markarova. According to The Cable News Network, Markova told a reporter that almost 300 villages and different settlements have been freed, 13 settlements of which were recovered by units in the Kherson region.
