Many people see Thanksgiving as just a holiday, but it’s more than that. Thanksgiving is celebrated by many people by eating special foods, watching parades, running 5K’s, and a lot more, but not everybody values what it’s really about.
Many years ago, The Pilgrims, English settlers who established Massachusetts, came on their ship, the Mayflower, and settled in Plymouth Bay. Their first winter there, in 1620, was horrible. They suffered starvation and diseases and only about half of them had survived. Fortunately, the harvest in the fall of 1621 was great. There were 20 acres full of maize, barley, and meat. Four men were sent to hunt, and they came back with enough fowl to last a week. That night, the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag, an American Indian tribe, threw a big feast with all the food they had. This was known as the first thanksgiving meal.
After knowing how thanksgiving started, we can learn that thanksgiving is about being grateful for what we have right now. The Pilgrims and Wampanoags were thankful for their good harvest, and they threw a feast. That is why every thanksgiving, when we eat the food we made, it’s a reminder to be thankful for everything you have. Think about The Pilgrims and Wampanoag and how they were grateful for their good fall harvest and not mourning what happened to them in the wi
nter. Think about what you can be thankful for on that day.
