On August 30th, the class of 12A went on a field trip to a surf shop. We interviewed Ms. Villalobos about it in the following weeks.

What was the goal of the trip?

They were studying operations management in business class, so this trip allowed them to look at different methods of production, how to make production more efficient, and how to consider things such as where production is located, suppliers, inventories, etc.

The class had watched videos on the topic but she wanted students to have a real life visit to a production processing plan. The objective of the trip was for the students to witness all the processes inside the surf shop.

What did you do there? What was the learning growth?

They experienced a whole visit for the entire process of a surfboard. The raw materials they use for the boards come from the USA and are stored there until processed. First, they cut the material with a machine that has a software which they need to identify the type of board. Then, the shaper hand contours the final shape of the board. It is then finalized with a glass top. After that, some of the boards need painting.

The students of 12A learned the process of board-making and related it to what they had learned in their class. They also identified the production method. Since they make each board individually, it is job production. Job production involves making items one at a time; it’s not mass production like with other popular brands.

Can you make a connection to the theory of knowledge?

The shaper– the person in charge of shaping the board–is someone who can be asked how he knows when the shape is actually done. The shaper needs to be skilled.
